Some Suggestions for Parents about self defence for kids
Nowadays, the rate of child abduction, rape, abuse, and bullying in schools is happening everywhere and increasing each day. It shows the importance of kids learning or knowing techniques to defend themselves in facing such problems. And it brings lots of questions in parents’ minds about how to help their kid? What age is appropriate for a kid to attend a self-defense class? In this article, we have tried to answer almost all the questions in your mind about self defence for kids.
Teaching self-defense does not only mean enrolling your kid into self-defense classes or any physical training. It means getting them ready to face any situation and get safely out of it. As you see, most of the crimes children are so small they don’t even know what’s happening with them, so teaching them from early days is important. And who can be a better teacher than a parent? Here are some tips and suggestions for parents to keep in mind, so without any delay, let’s get through it:
- Awareness about the situation: Children who are unaware of their surroundings or the situation they can get into are easy prey for criminals. Make them aware; start by telling your kids not to go with anyone except some trusted people you choose, and not take anything from strangers. Teach them about the wrong touch and what to do when someone makes them uncomfortable. And most importantly, tell them you are there and listen to everything without judging and blaming them. Do not fear anybody.
- Things your kids should always have: For small kids, a whistle or anything which produces loud sounds, for older ones can carry a stun gun, pepper spray, or taser if the school allows them. And teach them in what situation they should use these things and never harm any innocent with these, as they are not for fun.
- What to do facing a danger: Prepare your children for emergencies by teaching them how to avoid being held, resisting a potential captor, and escape. When they detect danger, instruct them to yell loudly, explaining that this will draw attention and aid. When no one is around, tell them to bite the kidnapper and flee or grasp a tree or pole and hold on tight while looking for a way out.
- When to enroll the kid in self-defense classes: Some teachers take kids of age 3 years, and some have a minimum restriction of 10 years. We suggest enrolling your kid at 10 years of age; they can understand everything at this age. Till then, you can teach them some tricks and basics to avoid the perpetrator.
