Hollywood’s Glamour Girls
Hollywood’s omnipresent long, be achy waves smartened up this season and have transformed into the glamour curl. The stylized, polished, Oliver Peoples sunglasses wearing femme fatale look has quite the pedigree; the original version is associated with film noir star Veronica Lake. This fall, Gucci and Valentino showed modern (read: not stiff) variations that wowed us thanks to their lush-yet-restrained beauty. The cultivated curls—complete with deep side part—are making an appearance in celebrity style too, as notable ladies like Natalie Port man take this elegant look to the red carpets.
Glamour curls lend themselves to variation, which means you can make this style as involved or easy as you’d like. Your lazy editors like to start by making the look’s signature deep part in their wet hair and drying the hair in this pre-assigned position. (Our hair can be unruly thanks to bangs (Hillary) and waves (Katherine) but drying after you’ve chosen your part helps to “train” it.) To fatten up your strands and coax curl out of flat locks, spritz on a thickener before drying. We’re currently crazy about Ted Gibson’s Build It Blow Drying Agent ($28). It builds body, smooth flyways, and acts as a heat-protector, neato!
Options abound for curl making, so take your pick (whatever works best for your hair type/texture and styling abilities, naturally) from round brush, curling iron, or hot rollers. If you use hot rollers, choose jumbo sized curlers, don’t leave them in too long (resulting in pageant hair), and only wind them to just below your ears (so the top part of your hair stays smooth). Conair’s Instant Heat Jumbo-Sized Rollers are our go-to product, as they’re great price and never snag your hair (from $19.99). The same applies to curling irons; only curl to the earlobes and use a big barrel, like Tigi Bed Head’s Tourmaline Nano-Ceramic Styling Iron (from $25). A round brush plus blow dryer will give you softer curls; so,don’t be concerned about the above-mentioned over-volumizing. We suggest holding the brush horizontally when drying each section into a curl, and then shift the brush to a vertical position to unwind the curl.
